You don’t have to be a horticulturist to know that there are a multitude of options when it comes to choosing the wood for a custom project. My first priority is that the wood I select would have otherwise been discarded.  I utilize mostly pallet wood since it is readily available.  While you have to search for quality pallet wood, it is usually available in town and most folks are trying to get rid of it.  I have also used reclaimed wood from a neighbors old deck.  I saw the wood cut up into sections and piled out by the road for the city pickup crew.  I beat them to it and was able to find enough wood for 5 nice size frames.  I have also made 4 frames out of an old bookcase.  This was a bookcase made 20 years ago out of scrap wood and painted several different colors over the years.  A quick sand provided a nice aged look to the frame.  Keep your eyes open for wood that others are getting rid of.  Not only can it often make a great frame, but it adds character as well.
