Saucer Magnolia

Magnolia x soulangeana

Photo captured in my neighbors back yard in Wilmington, NC on January 21, 2018.  This particular specimen was planted by my neighbors mother over 40 years ago.  This cousin to our native Magnolia exhibits grace in all seasons as a beautiful specimen tree.  The show stopping rose and cream flowers bloom before foliage in late winter often beginning pink in the bud.  This photograph was taken during a warm spell in January immediately following a very cold three week stretch.  Native to Asia, but grows well here in dappled light and acid soils. When old man winter is kind, it is a truly lovely sight in full bloom.
