Mexican Sunflower

Tithonia rotundifolia

Photographed at the New Hanover County Arboretum in Wilmington, NC on June 20, 2016.  Orange is usually only loved by rabid fans of the Tennessee Volunteers or the Florida Gators, but Tithonia provides a magical orange hue that even a Georgia Bulldog can love.  This annual flower performs best in average, well-drained soils in full sun, but provides a better than average glow in the early morning sunlight. The lolling plant leans to and fro in the summer breezes, while providing a brightly colored pad for landing insects.
