Hyacinth Bean

Lablab purpureus

Photographed in my yard in Wilmington, NC on August 21, 2017.  A tender perennial vine grown as an annual here.  This vine will grow over you if you stand still too long.  This twining vine ain’t no joke and it will take off after a short respite to get roots down.  Like a sprouting child, you can chart its growth on the trellis, but unlike that child, you will have to mark its growth daily.  Lavender bloom followed by purple seed pods are in full glory from mid-summer to frost.  My favorite part is that you can collect the seed, store dry and cool for the winter and sow right back in the garden next spring after danger of frost. If its free, its for me!
