Hot Lips Salvia

Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips’

Photographed at my house in Wilmington, NC on August 2, 2016.  A wild selection of the Mexican Salvia microphylla (Little-leaf Sage), creating a beautiful red and white bloom atop a fragrant and sticky tender perennial.  The blooms will open as the pictured bi-color bloom later in the season, but first emerge with all red flowers mixed with all white flowers.  These plants and colors do a fantastic job of bringing in the hummingbirds for a drink of nectar.  Hot Lips has a long bloom season, from late spring to first frost. The Achilles heel is a cold, wet winter and anywhere other than the south makes this impossible to overwinter.
