Golden Shrimp Plant with Honeybee

Pachystachys lutea

Photographed on the UNCW campus in Wilmington, NC on September 9, 2017.  The Shrimp Plant grows to 6’ tall in its native Peru as an evergreen shrub.  Doesn’t sound like a shrimp to me!  Here, it is used as a unique annual flower for warm season color in flower beds.  It won’t overwinter here and only grows to 18” tall or so.  White flowers emerging from bright yellow bracts are attractive to many, including this honeybee buzzing around. Check it out and try something new.
