Raulston Sweetshrub

Calycanthus x raulstonii  ‘Hartlage Wine’

Photographed at Brunswick Community College Supply, NC on April 16, 2016. Beautiful, large maroon flowers fade to wine hues in April and May. The emerald green sea of leaves serve well to highlight the flowers.  This display only improves with buttery yellow fall color, all in the presence of wooded shade . . . a rare treasure indeed.  A cross between the fragrant native Sweetshrub and the showy Chinese Sweetshrub.  Named after NCSU Horticulture professor J. C. Raulston and student, Richard Hartlage, who made the original cross.
