Wax-leaf Begonia Male and Female Flower

Begonia semperflorens-cultorum

Photographed in the BCC greenhouse in Supply, NC on March 6, 2016.  Wax-leaf Begonia is a very well-known blooming annual flower used all over the land.  Green leaf Begonias bloom red, white or pink and grow best in shade.  Bronze leaf Begonias also bloom red, white or pink and grow in shade or sun.  Many wonderful Begonias, such as angel-wing, Iron Cross and Rex types, are used as houseplants the world over. In this photograph, you can see that Begonia are monecious (mon-e-cious), meaning they have separate male and female flowers on the same plant.  The two flowers on the left are male, sporting the pollen filled anthers, while the flower on the right is female with her coral-like pistils, which house the ovaries.
